‘Playgroup visits’

le toboggan playgroup visit

We come to you. 😀

Are you a French or Spanish playgroup? We can bring a small selection of our books to you.

Are you an English background playgroup and would like to expose your children to another language? Contact us and let’s organise a bilingual story time.

There are many benefits to exposing children to a different languages. Our story times are the perfect setting, we sing songs with actions that children are familiar with in English and the stories are read in French or Spanish and in English. The sessions are interactive as children ‘help’ me read the books.

For Perth metro only.

Reading with Your Eyes: The Magic of Picture Books

le toboggan picture books

Reading is such a delightful sensory journey! We get to touch the pages, admire the vibrant pictures, breathe in that wonderful book smell, and listen to the gentle rustle of the pages turning.

Picture books hold a special kind of magic when it comes to sparking a love for reading. They invite little ones to decode the stories hidden in the illustrations. These charming books are fantastic tools for nurturing young readers, igniting their curiosity, and helping them build their vocabulary and language skills.

Try this fun activity with your child: before diving into the text, ask them to describe what they see in the pictures. You might be surprised by their imaginative insights! Encourage them to ‘read’ the story to you using just the illustrations. If your child is younger, you can guide them to point out specific parts of the pictures. Ask them about shapes, colours, animals, and even the emotions they see.

Picture books are true treasures that foster early literacy and instil a lifelong love for reading in every language.

If you’re looking for the perfect next read for your little one, don’t hesitate to reach out! We’re here to help you find just the right book that will captivate and inspire.

Happy reading!

Raising bilingual children one story at the time

Raising bilingual children with le toboggan

We will all know it is difficult to raise bilingual children in a country where English is the dominant language.

Here are a few strategies that will help you pass on your language with books. Let’s get started raising bilingual readers.

📚Read Aloud Regularly: Set aside time each day for reading sessions in your language. This not only builds language skills but also creates a bonding experience.

📚Choose Language Books (including bilingual). They will still be useful when your child starts reading on his own.

📚Incorporate Cultural Stories: Use books that reflect the culture associated with your language. This can help children develop an appreciation for their heritage and understand the context in which the language is used.

📚Encourage Repetition: Reading the same book multiple times can help reinforce vocabulary and concepts. Children often enjoy familiarity, and repetition aids memory.

📚Discuss the Story: After reading, engage your child in discussions about the story in both languages. Ask questions, encourage them to summarise, or express their thoughts to enhance comprehension and fluency.

📚Create a Language-Rich Environment: Surround your child with books in your language. A diverse library encourages exploration and reinforces language learning naturally.

📚Use Storytelling: Encourage your child to retell stories in their own words. This practice helps them use the language creatively and boosts their confidence.

📚Involve Family Members: If possible, involve family members or friends who speak the language. They can read together, share stories, and provide additional language exposure.

By integrating these practices into daily routines, you can effectively use books to reinforce and pass on your language, helping your children thrive in a bilingual environment.
